If you are a bit of a daredevil and want to try the ultimate winter sport, then a snowmobile safari is just what you are looking for! Not only would you get to drive one yourself, but you will also experience the beautiful Luosto scenery in a unique way. The snowmobile excursions to choose from are listed below.
Snowmobile Driving School (10:00-12:00 Mondays, 11:00-13:00 Fridays, 13:00-15:00 Sundays)
As an introduction to snowmobile driving, you will receive instructions on how to operate the vehicle and all its safety rules before embarking on a leisurely paced drive through the forest. We highly recommend everyone who wants to participate in a snowmobile excursion throughout the week to do this excursion first as it will greatly enhance your enjoyment for future excursions/safaris. Nevertheless, it is not compulsory to take this course.
Snowmobile Safari to Huskyfarm 14:15-16:30 (Mondays)
This tour takes you to a husky farm, where, on arrival, you will receive mushing instructions before allowing a team of dogs to take you on a short sleigh ride (approx. 4km). After meeting the other dogs in the kennels and hearing tales of these loyal friends, you will get a warm drink and buns before returning to Luosto. Car transfer is also available on request.
Panorama Snowmobile Safari (11:00-14:00 Tuesdays, 12:00-15:00 Saturdays)
This trip is a sightseeing safari around the beautiful Luosto scenery. Picnic lunch will be served and followed by hot coffee made in the traditional Lappish way: over the open fire. Your guide will teach you how to make a fire in the wilderness and you will have a chance to enjoy the panorama of the most beautiful landscape in Luosto area.
Snowmobile Safari to Reindeer Farm 15:00-18:00 (Thursdays)
This safari gives you the opportunity to sample two local forms of transport; the snowmobile and the reindeer sled. You will drive your snowmobile to a local reindeer farm where you will then drive your own reindeer sleigh. Whilst there you will see plenty of reindeer and learn how these gentle animals are an essential part of Lappish life as you warm up by the fire with a hot drink and pastries before returning to Luosto. Driving distance for a return trip: approximately 30km.
Snowmobile to Northern Lights TeePee 18:30-22:30 (Thursdays)
This evening excursion takes you on a snowmobile drive through the varying landscapes surrounding Luosto to the ‘Northern Lights Tepee’ for a presentation & slide show. You’ll be enthralled by the presentation explaining the fascinating phenomena of the Northern Lights as breathtaking photographs are projected onto the ceiling above. You´ll learn about ancient beliefs and myths and the latest scientific truths about the northern nights. You may also have an opportunity to listen radio signals from space. Driving distance: approximately 64 km. Please note: The viewing of the real Northern Lights cannot be guaranteed as they are a natural phenomena. A cup of coffee or tea and pastries are included.
