Skiing
Downhill skiing and snowboarding slopes are located right in the heart of Luosto. The slopes are perfect for beginners to explore a new sport and intermediates to brush up on their skills. If you don't want to bring your own equipment, you can hire the gear locally. For beginners, the Easy-to-learn ski week provides all equipment and 5 x 2h group lessons plus lift passes to enable you to practice everything you've learnt! For ski options and prices, click here.
Evening Snowshoe Hike 18:00-20:00 (Mondays)
As you walk on snowshoes while enjoying the peace and stillness, remember to look up and search for the magical swirls and breathtaking colours of the Northern Lights. When stopping for a break, you will enjoy hot beverages and sausages by a campfire. Please note: This hike is not suitable for children under 6 years old. The Northern Lights is a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed to appear.
Snow Sculpting 10:00-10:30 (Tuesdays & Fridays)
Want to learn the secrets of snow sculpting? Then this activity is a perfect ice breaker! Get the basic instructions & a sculpting kit and spend the day making your own snow art. You will get 1 snow block and sculpting kit and work at your own pace. Also available on other days & times on request.
Guided Cross Country Skiing 14:30-16:30 (Tuesdays)
Cross country skiing is very popular in Lapland. On this guided trip you will be given basic instructions and techniques to allow you to enjoy this leisurely paced excursion. A break will be made to enjoy a hot coffee or juice around campfire. This is not a demanding trip, so no previous skiing experience is required and everyone (over the age of 8) with basic fitness level will be able to participate.
Amethyst Mine Safari 11:30-13:30 (Wednesdays)
Driving across the Luosto Fells to the top of Lampivaara peak where you find the only operative amethyst mine in Europe. It may be the only gem mine in whole world that welcomes visitors. In warm cosy Lappish hut the mine visitors hear the fascinating stories of amethyst, how it was formed 2000 millions of years ago, how the place was found and how the mine is run on permanent progress principle, how people in all cultures have believed in the mystical powers of amethyst and other interesting tales found in ancient legends. After stories the visitors are guided to the mine and each will dig and find a personal lucky amethyst for keeps. May also be requested for Mon,Tue, Fri and Sat.
Winter Sleigh Ride to Lumberjack's Lodge 17:30-19:30 (Wednesdays)
NEW excursions introduced for this season, taking you into the depths of the Lappish forest by a snowmobile-pulled sleigh ride to the mystical Orresokka Lumberjacks Lodge where you can enjoy pancakes, sausages and hot beverages by a campfire. Minimum 4 people required for activity to operate.
Snowshoe Hike 09:00-11:00 (Thursdays) & 10:30-12:30 (Sundays)
After being equipped with snowshoes, you will enjoy a unique experience of snow walking. When stopping for a break, you will enjoy hot beverages and sausages by a campfire. Please note: This hike is not suitable for children under 6 years old.
Sleigh Ride to Ice fishing 11:30-14:30 (Thursdays)
You will begin your ice fishing adventure with a snowmobile-pulled sleigh ride to the wide frozen river. Upon arrival to the location, you will be shown how to drill a hole through the metre thick ice and how to master this arctic hobby. You'll have a couple of hours to try your luck, whilst sitting on reindeer skins on the frozen ice. A campfire will be lit to keep the participants warm and so that they can enjoy hot drinks and a light lunch. All fishing equipment is provided.
Snowmobile to Northern Lights TeePee 18:30-22:30 (Thursdays)
This evening excursion takes you on a snowmobile drive through the varying landscapes surrounding Luosto to the ‘Northern Lights Tepee’ for a presentation & slide show. You’ll be enthralled by the presentation explaining the fascinating phenomena of the Northern Lights as breathtaking photographs are projected onto the ceiling above. You´ll learn about ancient beliefs and myths and the latest scientific truths about the northern nights. You may also have an opportunity to listen radio signals from space. Driving distance: approximately 64 km. Please note: The viewing of the real Northern Lights cannot be guaranteed as they are a natural phenomena. A cup of coffee or tea and pastries are included.
Pyha Ice Climbing 13:30-17:00 (Fridays)
NEW winter activity for this season, introducing you to another key winter element: ice! Try ice climbing and abseiling at Pyha's beautiful Tajukangas where an experiened guide will teach you the secrets of ice climbing. You will learn how to use ice axes and crampons before tackling your own Mountain Everest. Equipment and hot beverages will be provided at location. Min. age 14 years. Car transfer provided. NOTE: offering of this excursion is subject to local insurance conditions.
